IMPORTANT NEW DEPARTURE AND BOARDING DETAILS
NEW LANDING LOCATION: We will board Grande 30 minutes prior to departure at H&M Landing, 2803 Emerson Street, San Diego, California, 92106 (one block off Rosecrans Street). Phone: (619) 222-1144. Website: https://www.hmlanding.com. There are several hotels/motels and many restaurants within easy walking distance of the dock, and the San Diego Airport is only a 5-minute drive away.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO THE LANDING: Click Here
PARKING: There is a large parking at H&M Landing for a fee. Enter the lot using the Emerson & Scott entrance and you’ll be right at the landing, where you can drop off your gear and seek permanent parking. Free parking is available on the residential streets around the harbor (for day trips) – particularly to the west of Rosecrans Street – but such street parking is very limited in summer months. If the landing parking lot is full, you’ll be directed to a lighted off-site self-serve pre-pay parking lot about two blocks away that has always had space and accepts credit cards.
GEAR UNLOADING: You may pull into the landing parking lot, unload your gear directly in front of H&M Landing and then park in the lot or seek on-street parking. You’re not charged if you’re in the parking lot for less than 30 minutes.
PHOTO I.D. and BOARDING PASS REQUIRED: All passengers departing H&M Landing must complete the manifest and present photo identification and obtain a boarding pass prior to passing through the Coast Guard security gates. This is mandatory procedure per U.S. Homeland Security.
START YOUR DAY STRESS-FREE: We recommend that you arrive at the landing an hour prior to scheduled departure to allow plenty of time to find the landing and available parking, unload or transport gear, obtain a boarding pass at the H&M Landing ticket window, sign the manifest, use the landing’s restroom, visit with friends, and board Grande 30 minutes before scheduled departure. All trips depart on time without waiting for latecomers. Boarding begins 30 minutes prior to scheduled departure.
Airport and Lodging
You Don’t Necessarily Need a Rental Car
Many of our out-of-state participants fly in the day before the pelagic trip departs, to be certain of arriving in time and possibly to do some productive local on-shore birding. The San Diego Airport (SAN) is a mere 5- or 10-minute cab ride from the H&M Landing dock where Grande is located. The Ramada Inn at Fisherman’s Landing (see below) has a free shuttle from the airport. Upon request, as we return to port on the boat, we’ll coordinate shared taxis or vans.
Many of our out-of-town trip participants like the Dolphin Motel — a relatively inexpensive, yet adequate motel directly across the street from H&M Landing. The Dolphin gets good reviews on Trip Advisor. There are plenty of restaurants (see below) within walking distance of the Dolphin or Ramada (see below). There are small markets located nearby as well, but a large supermarket is farther afield (e.g., a Von’s store on the east side of Rosecrans Street over a mile to the north).
The Ramada Limited is a block north of Fisherman’s Landing. Celia Condit, owner of Searcher Natural History Tours, has been making lodging recommendations for over a decade and says: I always recommend the Ramada Limited right next door to the Dolphin — a little less funky, a little more mainstream, moderate prices; they have airport shuttle pick-up and drop-off, a parking lot, and an attached bar. (619) 225-9461. Ramada Limited San Diego Airport, 1403 Rosecrans Street, San Diego, CA 92106.
There are a number of additional motels and hotels within walking distance of the dock, including a Holiday Inn and a Best Western; these two also have free shuttle service to the airport.
